ADOPT A SHELTER DOG MONTH: WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE ADOPTING

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and at WHIMZEES we believe in the importance of supporting shelters and helping find the loving home they deserve. Choosing to adopt is about more than welcoming a dog into your home – it’s about giving an animal a second chance.

However, bringing home a rescue dog can feel overwhelming. To help make the transition easier, we’ve put together some simple tips to help your new companion settle in and feel at home.

BEFORE YOU ADOPT

Before bringing a shelter dog home, it’s important to think about whether you’re ready for the commitment.

Consider your:

– lifestyle
– work schedule
– activity level
– budget

Every dog has different needs, and finding the right match is one of the best ways to set both you and your future companion up for success.

TIPS TO HELP YOUR SHELTER DOG ADJUST

1. Prepare for his arrival
It’s important to gather all the necessities prior to bringing him home. Think about essentials such as a dog bed, food, treats, bowls and toys. Having everything ready before they arrive can help them feel welcome and comfortable from day one.

2. Create a specific safe-zone for him
Whether it’s a quiet corner, a separate room or a cosy bed by the window, give your dog a dedicated calm space where they can relax and adjust to their new surroundings at their own pace.

3. Have treats ready for calming, training and positive reinforcement
At WHIMZEES we have a full range of dental treats. The best part? They keep your dog occupied while also taking care of their beautiful smile and dental health. A chew can be a great way to provide enrichment and create positive associations during those first few days at home. Discover our dental treats: Our treats

But did you know we also have a sister brand called Wellness CORE who offers a full range of treats? Including reward, training and calming treats. These can help create positive associations and support your dog during the adjustment period. Discover their treats here.

4. Immediately start a healthy and sustainable routine
We all know a consistent routine is very important in any pet’s life. A fixed feeding schedule, regular walks at consistent times, a clear time to go to sleep or stay in their crate… A routine gives a sense of: “I’m part of this family now.”

5. And most importantly: be patient
This one speaks for itself. Being patient is one of the best things you can do for your new dog. It will not help if you force them to see people, to eat, to come out of their safe zone – let them come to you and be patient about everything. This will give your dog a sense of control.

AND LASTLY, THE BIGGEST TIP: THE 3-3-3 RULE

The 3-3-3 rule is a gentle reminder that settling in takes time for your new furry friend, and that every step of the journey matters.

1. The first three days

Everything is new for your dog. The smells, the people, the sounds. Your dog may seem uninterested, shy or tired and may not be very hungry. It’s important to remember this is normal. Simply being there and being patient is enough.

2. The next three weeks

This is where, slowly, your dog begins to understand how life works around his new home. Their true personality will start to show up more and you may even notice a few quirks and testing moments. Stay consistent and kind to continue building the trust that has been growing.

3. The next three months

By now, your dog knows that he is safe, that they have found their forever home. Of course, this isn’t linear and this could take longer for some dogs. But generally, after three months, the bond between you has deepened, the routines feel natural, and this is often when they begin to fully relax and be themselves.

Please remember that every dog is different, has a different story and a different character. And that’s okay. Some settle in quickly, others need more time. What matters most is a loving routine, a calm environment and patience.

Adopting a shelter dog can be one of life’s most rewarding experiences. With these tips and guidelines, you’ll help your new companion feel safe, secure and truly at home.
