BACK-TO-WORK: HOW TO PREVENT SEPARATION ANXIETY IN DOGS

September means a return to normal routines for most families, but for dogs who’ve spent the summer with extra company around, it can feel like anything but normal. As we get back on track with school and work, these sudden changes can be difficult for our four-legged friends.

Many dogs thrive on routine and predictability. When daily schedules change, some dogs tend to struggle to adapt, especially those who are particularly attached to their family members.

In some cases, these changes can lead to separation anxiety. While it is often mistaken for boredom, stubbornness, or naughty behaviour, separation anxiety is actually a stress-related condition.

Signs Your Dog May Be Struggling

Separation anxiety can show itself in many ways. Some signs are easier to spot than others. According to the ASPCA and RSPCA, signs to watch out for are:

  • Barking, howling, whining or pacing excessively
  • Chewing furniture, doors, or household items
  • Scratching at doors or windows
  • Having accidents indoors despite being house-trained
  • Becoming overly excited when family members return home

Less obvious signs may include:

  • Panting or trembling
  • Excessive drooling
  • Not eating treats or meals when alone
  • Lip licking
  • Restlessness

Because many dogs only display these symptoms when alone, their owners may not notice that there is a problem.

The good news is that there are multiple ways to help your dog. If you know a routine change is approaching, try to reintroduce alone time gradually rather than suddenly. Start with short absences and slowly increase the duration over time.

Mental stimulation can also help your dog to stay occupied. Food puzzles, lick mats, long-lasting chews*, enrichment toys and scent games are great examples that can help engage your dog’s mind. Combined with regular physical exercise, these activities can help your dog feel calmer and more settled when they’re alone.

*As with any chew, always choose a product that is appropriate for your dog’s size and chewing habits, and ensure it is given under supervision or while a responsible adult is nearby.

The importance of routine and nutrition

When life gets busy again, maintaining a consistent routine for your dog, will help provide reassurance and stability.

That’s why a dependable feeding routine can play an important role in helping your dog adjust to a new schedule. Alongside the regular exercise, walks, enrichment activities and quality time, a balanced, high-quality diet supports your dog’s overall wellbeing.
